Tanzschule Manhold
Ongoing voluntary projects since 1999.
The story
My parents' business (a ballroom dance school in Germany) was the second 'victim' of my early web design days. The site, still from an era of fading sidebars, is screaming for a re-design, and in my priority list it is even above the CCH re-design, but I must say, I've gotten attached to the site's personality.
The drawings of dancing couples, in almost cartoon style, drawn by my mother, give the site a character that distinguishes it from the other Dance School sites and I have had many compliments about this site. People seem to like it.
The code
This site needs an overhaul. It still shows signs of its origins in version 3 code, although I do try to keep it standard-compliant and forward- as well as backward-compatible. The infrastructure needs improving, some of the pages taken apart into smaller chunks... Next weekend...
Update 1 Dec 2001
It's done. Major overhaul. I've moved the site to a new host, improved the code and the CSS, moved the site over to XHTML, improved the structure, broke down the long pages, added breadcrumbs to some sections, but maintained the site's character.
Update April 2006
Finally. The last of my sites converted to CSS layout. Took me only 5 years from converting the first site. It's been a thorn in my side for a long time. No self-respecting web designers can still have table-based layouts in his/her portfolio these days. I have no excuse other than the fact that voluntary projects usually don't get priority treatment.
The look hasn't changed much (because i still like it) but everything under the hood is new.
