Despite the suggestion that the recent rift with the U.S. will have political and economic ramifications, the Germans find it all rather amusing.

Unless these lone cancellations of orders for BMWs and bottles of Riesling snowball into something to be taken seriously, we'll continue to be treated to a most unusual spectacle: The Germans are being singled out for criticism and enjoying it.

World Bank and International Monetary Fund... not reality... can't be... Ferengi?... some twisted fiction?... some bleak scifi plot?... i'll surely wake up soon...

... rich nations spend nearly $1 billion a day in agricultural subsidies alone, a practice he says wastes resources and deeply harms poor countries trying to develop their own economies. He added that ending such barriers is one of the best ways to narrow the huge gaps in income around the world.

I went to Burning Man once, in 2000 (too expensive to go regularly if you don't live in the States), but I'm still getting the newsletter (sign up here). This year there were numerous accounts of theft and vandalism (one example). As the population grows and changes from the core tribe to ignorant and non-caring mainstream, crime increases and makes it a less happy event for many. Sad how all good things always eventually get spoiled by assholes.

My crew and I had been anticipating, and felt prepared for, damage from harsh desert conditions and even accidental human damage. Theft, however, was an insult we hoped we wouldn't have to endure.

Violent games are good for kids:

Experts on childhood and adolescence have long recognised the importance of violent fantasy play in overcoming anxieties, processing anger and providing outlets for aggression.

German elections - the morning after. CDU 38.5%, SPD 38.5%, SPD got 9000 votes more than the CDU. Hands up everyone who thinks this system still works.

Germany is currently rerunning the US 2000 elections. Does it strike anyone else as curious that peoples around the the world have difficulties in deciding for one party or the other? Seems there really is no difference. I've got this sinking feeling again. But I can't leave the ship I've only just arrived on.

Hobbes: "You're packing?"
Calvin: "Yep. Get your toothbrush, Hobbes. We're outta here. It's an outrage how grown-ups have polluted the earth! I refuse to inherit a spoiled planet! I'm leaving!"
Hobbes: "Really? Where to?"
Calvin: *

A gullible induhvidual actually fell for the nigerian money transfer scam, that i'm sure most of you have seen in your email inboxes now and again. She cost her employers two million dollars and will probably end up in prison. (via mefi)

020922 18:20 Browsers

Do you love your browser? You might think it impossible to have such an emotional relationship with your browser. Well, you're probably not using Mozilla. I love my browser!

Mozilla occasionally adds features that just knock my socks off. The latest is Type ahead find, in its latest release Mozilla 1.2a. If you are looking for something on a webpage, you can forget about bringing up the cumbersome Find dialog (Ctrl+F), you don't need it anymore. Just type ahead (with the focus on the page, not the location bar) and Mozilla will jump to and highlight the word you're typing. First it only looks for links but if you want to search the whole text, just type "/" (slash) before the word.

It's fabulous! I was so happy when I figured it out. That's why I love Mozilla. It's marvelous! Brilliant! Awesome! I'll be going on about this to my friends for the next few weeks :)

What is it with all the good news lately? I'm getting suspicious. The hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica should close by 2050, while the edges of the Sahara desert are allegedly turning green again.

Just came across this great 'Where do you live and would you recommend it?' thread at K5, which was mentioned on the evolt chat list as an interesting cultural comparison. The best post is from Amundensen-Scott South Pole Station:
