John Peel died today. He'll always be the voice and the sound of the UK for me. He gave obscure bands like the Knights of the Occasional Table airplay.
James Dean Bradfield, lead singer of the Manic Street Preachers, paid tribute to Peel.

Excellent news from Cuba: They have decided to ban the US dollar for transactions, which only caused a whole lot of problems in the past. This is not only good for cuban independence, it also shows that the US dollar is losing its status as the world currency.
Following the economic crash of the 1990s, and the legalisation of the dollar, many Cubans have become dependant on dollars for many goods, including some basic necessities.[...]
In his message, Mr Castro urged Cubans to tell relatives to send money in other currencies, such as euros, British pounds or Swiss francs.

quote of the month
People are disappointed with the future they're living in. Since 2001, the refrain has gone up, louder year by year: "This is the future. Where's my flying car? Where's my fucking jet pack?" Pre-millennium, we were living in an unprecedented density of imagined futures, and we assumed it was all waiting for us around the corner. And here we are, around the corner, and none of it is standing here.
