A friend of mine discovered this, so i can't take credit for it: November 17th UserFriendly strip is almost the same as the one from exactly 10 years ago.

In 1989 i was an exchange student in the United States and i was hanging out with the Progressive Student Movement on campus, which is how i ended up at a Pro-choice demonstration in Washington D.C., the biggest and best rally i've ever been to. (In today's climate i probably would have been deported for that.) Roe versus Wade, the 1973 court decision that made abortion legal in the States, has been under constant threat. Now it's about to be over-turned.

The Center for Reproductive Rights studied what would happen if Roe v. Wade fell and protection for abortion was left up to the states. In a report issued Thursday, the group finds a majority of states would ban the procedure. [...]

"If Roe is overturned, there is a strong possibility that a clandestine, illegal underground will again emerge to meet the need for abortions, a need that virtually no one believes will disappear," the report warns, noting that seven of the 10 poorest states in the country are considered likely to ban abortions within a year of reversing Roe.

Sometimes i feel so privileged to have lived during this short period of freedom, where women became equal, gays came out of the closet, political correctness shaped the social and political landscape. That short period between the struggles of the 60s and 70s and the reactionary new millennium. I grew up a woman with all the choices and the right to make these choices. Even if it wasn't perfect it was the best we had for a while. All this is over now. Another civil liberty gone.

quote of the month

Author Ken MacLeod places the Singularity in the context of post-2001 hopelessness. "When human beings feel they can't change the future, they begin to imagine that maybe superhuman beings can: gods, angels, aliens - and now artificial intelligences (AI). The idea of the Singularity is just a sophisticated version of this ancient ... superstition, that human history is or soon will be made by something other and better than human beings."
